Mangrove Ecosystem Monitoring and Management Project

Challenge:

To use satellite remote sensing to map and count mangrove plantations along the Saudi Coastline. The project was developed as part of the Saudi Space Agency’s Earth Observation challenge, and aimed to target the Saudi Green Initiative, as well as high emitting industries interested in Carbon Offsets, who require satellite remote sensing solutions to map offset projects annually to
ensure accurate verification of carbon offset credits.

Solution:

Our Mangrove Ecosystem Monitoring and Management solution leverages satellite remote sensing and AI-driven analytics to revolutionise mangrove ecosystem management along the Saudi coastline. This innovative tool offers comprehensive capabilities, including:

Satellite-Based Mapping: High-resolution satellite imagery combined with advanced machine learning models enables precise mapping of mangrove plantations. The tool tracks changes over time, providing critical insights into ecosystem health and expansion or degradation patterns.

Above Ground Biomass (AGB) Estimation: Utilising satellite-derived indices, the solution calculates AGB to determine the volume of organic material stored in mangroves. This provides an accurate measure of their growth and productivity.

Carbon Sequestration Assessment: The tool estimates CO2 emissions and sequestration potential by analyzing AGB data, offering actionable insights into the mangroves’ role in carbon storage and climate change mitigation.

Results:

Selected as one of three finalists for the Saudi Space Agency’s Earth Observation challenge, we were also invited to present the solution at the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) in Riyadh.

The initial MVP focused on the Dammam Mangrove Eco Park and is now being rolled out to cover the entire Arabian Gulf and Red Sea mangrove ecosystems.
